COMMUNICATE THE ISOLATION STATUS

Step 5 - Lockout Isolation Tags

Introduction

Lockout Tagout tags provide clear, immediate communication that equipment is isolated and must not be operated.  They reinforce the lockout process by identifying who applied the control, the status of the equipment and the restrictions in place while work is underway.

To be effective, tags must be durable, legible, and suited to the environment in which they are used.  Standardised wording, colour coding and consistent application across site reduce ambiguity and strengthen the overall integrity of your energy control system.

Manufactured from durable, tear-resistant and chemical-resistant materials to remain legible, secure and effective in demanding industrial environments.  Designed to support global best-practice Lockout Tagout standards, including ANSI/ASSP Z244.1-2024, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147, CSA Z460-20, ISO 14118 and AS/NZS 4024.

This step ensures your tagging approach supports safe behaviour, clear communication and compliance with recognised lockout/tagout requirements.

Each pack contains 25 tags and is priced at NZ$55.00 + GST per pack, unless stated otherwise.

Danger Tag
Warns personnel that an energy-isolating device is secured and must not be operated. Used when physical lockout is not practicable, a Danger Tag provides a clear visual warning that the equipment is under control and must remain isolated until removed by the authorised person.

Identification Tag
Placed directly on each personal lock, the ID Tag identifies the lock owner by name, department and contact information. This ensures accountability, prevents unauthorised removal, and confirms who maintains control of each lockout point.

Isolation Tag
Identifies the specific energy source or isolation point that has been locked or tagged out. It links directly to the isolation list or procedure for traceability and verification.

Isolation tags are commonly used in group isolation and high-risk energy control activities where formal verification is required before personnel are exposed to hazardous energy.

Verification Tag
Used to confirm that an isolation point has been physically checked and verified to achieve a Zero Energy State before work begins.

Applied by an authorised verifier, the tag provides a clear visual indication that the isolation has been reviewed, hazardous energy has been controlled and the equipment is safe to proceed with maintenance, servicing or repair activities. It forms an important part of the verification process by helping workers distinguish between an isolation that has simply been locked out and one that has been independently verified.

Verification tags are commonly used in group isolation and high-risk energy control activities where formal verification is required before personnel are exposed to hazardous energy.

Commissioning Tag
Used during controlled energisation or commissioning. This tag indicates that temporary power or pressure has been applied under supervision, with risk controls in place and re-isolation required after testing.

Out of Service Tag
Applied to machinery that is faulty, damaged, defective or otherwise unsuitable for normal operation, the tag provides a clear visual warning that the equipment is unavailable for use. It helps communicate equipment status to workers and prevents inadvertent operation of unsafe equipment.

An Out of Service Tag does not provide hazardous energy control and must not be used as a substitute for Lockout Tagout. If servicing, maintenance or repair work is required, the appropriate Lockout Tagout procedure must be implemented before work begins.

Out of Service Tags are commonly used following equipment faults, breakdowns, damage reports, safety concerns or quality issues where equipment must remain unavailable until authorised for return to service.

Alternative Method Tag
Displayed when Alternative Method task is being performed. It authorises limited, safe access to equipment under specific risk-controlled conditions. The tag clearly communicates that the system is partially energised and that only trained and authorised personnel may enter or interact with the equipment to conduct a specific task.
